Sports Update
The first week of the NFL season finished with the New England Patriots losing their home opener to the Kansas City Chiefs 42-27. Key Kansas players who helped get the victory in the kickoff game included the Chiefs’ rookie running back Kareem Hunt, who racked up 246 total yards of offense — a new highest number for a player in his first NFL game; quarterback Alex Smith, who gained 368 yards and four touchdowns; and wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Both of New York’s NFL teams went home with L’s for their first games of the season. The Giants lost to the Dallas Cowboys 19-3, and the Jets were defeated by the Buffalo Bills 21-12.
Better luck next time! On Sunday, the Jets take on the Oakland Raiders, and Monday, the Giants play the Detroit Lions.
At the U.S. Open, Sloane Stephens took home the women’s singles trophy — quite a remarkable feat considering that six months ago, she was wheelchair-ridden, recovering from a foot injury and surgery that kept her off the tour for 11 months. Stephens beat Madison Keys 6-3, 6-0 in two sets to take home the title. For the men’s singles, US Open veteran Rafael Nadal returned to win his third men’s singles title. The Spanish all-star defeated Kevin Anderson 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
